Singapore's first Kidney Resource Centre was launched with the opening of our 14th dialysis centre with the help of a S$1.5 million contribution from Hong Leong, in memory of its founder, the late Kwek Hong Png. The resource centre is dedicated to providing information, counselling and support to kidney patients as well as the public on matters related to the prevention and management of kidney disease.

Our 7th dialysis centre marked yet another milestone as it became the largest renal facility in South East Asia with the capacity to serve 120 patients. It was also the first one to be set up in a community hospital in Singapore. The centre materialised after a generous contribution from Japan Airlines to Singapore's 25th Anniversary Fund, which was matched dollar-for-dollar by the Singapore government.

The third dialysis centre in Ang Mo Kio started operartions on April 9, 2007, thanks to a $1.25 million sponsorship by Pei Hwa Foundation towards its building fund. This centre can accommodate up to 120 patients. The total cost to build and equip this centre is about $1.5 million.

Singapore Pools answered the call of the increasing number of patients by setting up our third life-saving centre. It also was the first in eastern Singapore. Nearly 100,000 dialysis sessions later, it was completely renovated and re-equipped in 1997 with another magnanimous gift from Singapore Pools. At its re-opening, the Minister for Law and Foreign Affairs, Professor S. Jayakumar launched the NKFS' fitness regime programme for patients called Exercise for Life, the first in Asia.

Thanks to a $700,000 donation by NTUC Income, we built our sixth dialysis centre at Bukit Batok. It is the second centre to be built in western Singapore . With the opening of the centre, we also launched the Patient Advancement Fund with a gift of S$108,000 from NTUC Income and the Bukit Batok Constituency. This fund goes towards grants for vocational re-training and higher education, enabling patients to excel in their jobs.

With a generous donation from SCAL, we constructed our eighth dialysis centre featuring dialysis machines that developed together with German manufacturer, Fresenius AG. San Wang Wu Ti Religious Society donated S$735,000 to help pay for all the dialysis machines at the centre.

In response to the need to alleviate the pain and suffering of kidney patients living and working in the western part of Singapore, the New Creation Church’s leaders and its 8,000-strong congregation raised more than $2 million through a series of fund-raising activities to make this centre a reality. With the centre’s opening in December 2001, they became the first Christian organisation in Singapore to build a dialysis centre.

The centre features world-class technology for monitoring patients’ progress with internet connectivity to their Automated Peritoneal Dialysis (APD) machines in their own homes. The centre also serves as a convenient walk-in clinic for PD patients in need of clinical attention.

Through the steadfast support of 50,000 personnel from the Singapore Armed Forces who participated in a mass walk-a-jog, S$774,000 was raised to build our fourth centre, bringing life-saving treatment for the first time to people living in the west. Entirely refurbished in 1997, the centre has a spacious layout giving patients enough room for rehabilitative facilities and services.

By sponsoring NKF' 12th dialysis centre, the Singapore Armed Forces became the first organisation to sponsor two dialysis centres, epitomising its dedication to improve the quality of life of NKF patients. During the opening, the NKF also launched its Diabetes Control programme to tackle the sharp rise in the number of diabetic kidney patients.

This 15th dialysis centre has set a new record as being the largest centre in South-east Asia, extending a vital lifeline to 156 needy kidney patients. Sponsored by the famous Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple, this sprawling centre has a floor area of 650 square metres compared to the average size of between 400 and 500 square metres for other NKF dialysis centres.

Besides sponsoring its construction cost of S$2.2 million, the temple has also committed to bear the annual recurrent cost of S$1 million to run the centre.

Designed with traditional Chinese architecture and decor, its unique interior provides a relaxing ambience that gives patients the feeling of a "home away from home". The opening of this centre also saw the initiation of the first tuition programme by the NKFS conducted at the centre, benefiting 20 children of patients receiving treatment there.

Two caring organisations, the National Trades Union Congress and Singapore Pools, that have constantly supported our life-saving programmes, joined hands to build our 10th dialysis centre. Surpassing the JAL dialysis centre at Ang Mo Kio, it became the largest dialysis centre in South East Asia, providing life-saving treatment to 132 kidney patients living or working in this new town.

This $1.8 million centre marks the fulfillment of the dying wish of the late patriarch, Mr Tay Choon Huat, by his five children. For 30 long years, Mr Tay was the president of Thong Teck, a religious institution which has been active in helping the less fortunate. The Tay children took their father's compassionate spirit a step further by building a Kidney Resource Centre, our second, next to the dialysis centre. The resource centre provides the public access to health screenings and a wealth of health information.
